Springtime failure is forcing me to change my master cylinder, any advice?? What the reason for the colored band on the old master?

If you have an original master cylinder I’d recommend having it brass sleeved by Apple Hydraulics or White Post Restorations. It will be more expensive than a new reproduction, but much better. The red tag is just some kind of manufacturer ID tag. I did ask Apple to preserve mine when I sent it to them and they did.

They seem to be so rough in the bore that they abrade the rubber seals relatively quickly and you wind up with leaks again in two or three years.

The quality ten years ago was probably better than today. TBH, I’ve had no personal experience with the repros in use, but there are numerous threads on here about the poor quality of the currently available repros. I actually bought a new clutch master and slave cylinder and wound up not using them based on comments posted on Triumph Exp. The slave cylinders out there today aren’t machined correctly for the mounting bracket. They’ll probably work ok, but I decided to keep all my original hydraulic cylinders.

I installed a new one and have not had any issues. To many purist think if you change a part you will go to hell. I can believe someone somewhere got a faulty master or slave. How many of you never went to work after a night out. I would think todays machinery and talent are far better than anything the Britts did back then ! Frank

You can see the difference in the bores. The OE Girlings have a mirror finish; the newer ones are rougher,

You are right about the numerous

posts

that speak of aftermarket so called bad quality of the new masters. But I would venture to say that most have simply

heard

they are bad and so repeat the claim. Repeated enough = indisputable fact. No doubt some are bad, like many parts these days but I'd venture to say there are a majority of them that are also performing perfectly. My own Lucas/TRW is just 2 years old and the DOT4 in the reservoir is as clear as the day I filled it up. - Pete

Well, I personally replaced two brand new brake MCs. Both were EXACTLY 12 months old. Sent the third new one directly to Apple Hydraulics to be resleeved. No problems since.

Call it what you want. But, that is what happened to me.

I had a new leaky TRW clutch master that I took to a local hydrulics business*. They told me they could not work on it as they are not licensed to work on road going auto parts (even though it was not a brake component)

But they were appalled at the finish on the cyl bores that they likened to a cheese grater

* Island hose and hydrulic.

Pete, you’re right, the evidence is anecdotal and anecdotal evidence isn’t proof of anything. But here’s the thing. I HATE working on hydraulics, so anything I can do to minimize the chances of having to it again in the foreseeable future is worth it to me.
