When did the Red Line open Los Angeles? ›

1993: The Red Line opens

That year, the new agency finally opened its underground subway, dubbed the Red Line. The first segment was designated MOS-1, consisted of five stations from Union Station to Westlake/MacArthur Park, and opened on January 30, 1993.

Most trains run from 4 a.m. until midnight or 1 a.m. on Sunday – Thursday, and all lines (including the Orange and Silver Line Busways) run until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. If you plan on returning late at night, be sure to check the timetables for the lines you're using.

The B Line is one of the city's two fully-underground subway lines (along with the D Line). The two lines share tracks through Koreatown and Downtown Los Angeles.

The entrance to Los Angeles's original subway system lies hidden on a brushy slope next to an apartment building that resembles a Holiday Inn. Known as the “Hollywood Subway,” the line opened in 1925; ran 4,325 feet underground, between downtown and the Westlake District; and closed in 1955.

The Los Angeles Metro Rail runs approximately from 4:30 am to 1:30 am, although the schedule varies depending on the line and day of the week.

TIP: Most bus and rail lines start around 4am and keep running past midnight, but they're less frequent in the evening, so be sure to plan your return trip before you go.

The A Line runs 48.5 miles (78.1 km) between Azusa and Downtown Long Beach, serving 44 stations.

The Red Line was created in 1993, when the CTA adopted color-coded system for all of its "L" routes. In February 1993, a new connection opened from the State Street subway south of Roosevelt to Cermak–Chinatown.

The line initially opened as the Blue Line on Saturday, July 14, 1990, and ran from Pico to Anaheim Street. The Long Beach Loop section to Long Beach opened in September 1990, followed by the tunnel into 7th Street/Metro Center in February 1991.
