How many roaches is considered an infestation?
If your home has 5 or fewer co*ckroaches, it can be identified as a light infestation. If it is between 10 to 25 roaches, it can be a moderate one. But if it exceeds 25, it can now be classified as a heavy infestation. You should know that the few roaches you see at home are not the only ones you have to deal with.
That old bit of kitchen wisdom that for every roach you see, there are 10 you don't see -- forget it. For every one you see there can be 1,000 you don't see, according to Richard S. Patterson, who studies co*ckroaches in the Agriculture Department's Insects Affecting Man and Animals Laboratory.
While the presence of one co*ckroach in your home can be enough to send you into a panic, one roach doesn't necessarily mean you have a full blown infestation. Roaches are social pests, however, and reproduce quickly.
co*ckroach feces will be visible during an infestation. Small roaches produce feces that resemble coffee grounds or black pepper, while larger roaches expel cylindrical droppings. The quantity of visible feces is oftentimes a good indicator of the level or duration of infestation.
When you consider that most roaches develop into adults in under 35 days, you realize it doesn't take long for a home to be infested. The only real limiting factor is the availability and quantity of food sources. This is all to say, it doesn't take long for a few roaches to turn into a full infestation.
Finding a co*ckroach nest means finding several (or several dozen) co*ckroaches and, probably, a few dead ones. You'll also see plenty of roach droppings and old egg cases lying around. co*ckroach droppings are tiny and look like coffee grounds or black pepper. Droppings start to collect in areas with high activity.
Unfortunately, co*ckroaches are not loners. If you see one, there are likely many more that you can't see. co*ckroaches are nocturnal creatures, so you'll most likely spot them late at night, especially if you walk into your kitchen and turn on the light.
In areas with high moisture, co*ckroaches will produce dark, irregular shaped smear marks as they crawl along walls or even when they rest. You may see these marks on horizontal surfaces and at wall-floor junctions where co*ckroaches are most active.
Coat the inner walls of the jar with petroleum jelly. Place the jar near known co*ckroach hiding spots. Before you leave your trap, place food (such as bread or baby food) inside the jar. You can also pick a used jar with leftover peanut butter, jelly, or flavored spread inside.

How many sprays does it take to get rid of roaches?
Create a soapy water solution that you can spray with a bottle. It will only take about 2 – 3 sprays to kill any roaches, as the soapy solution will cover their breathing pores and suffocate them.
While co*ckroaches are one of the most common pest problems, they are also one of the most stubborn. Infestations are hard to get rid of because the insects hide in a host of areas, breed quickly, have a very high reproductive potential and may develop resistance to pesticides.
Some factors that can attract co*ckroaches to clean houses include: Moisture. Leaking sinks and appliances create conditions in which roaches thrive, since they offer a readily available source of water as well as the warm, sheltered spaces that provide the ideal harborage for co*ckroach nests. Untidy landscaping.
The bedroom is full of dead skin and hair that many people often overlook. Underneath dressers and inside closets are popular hiding spots for roaches, as it offers shelter and food – as long as you don't clean those places.
To tell if an apartment has co*ckroaches, look for feces, shed skins, smear marks, and dead roaches. If there's a large infestation, you can smell co*ckroaches due to their oily, musty odor.
co*ckroaches can get inside a fridge by slipping between gaps in the door. If the rubber seal is loose, they'll find an entry point. They can also sneak in through cracks or crevices in the outer shell. If the back or underside components leave an opening, co*ckroaches can use this to reach the interior.
Is there a queen roach? co*ckroaches are not truly social insects (like honey bees or termites). As such, they do not have a queen. However, they are considered 'gregarious' and tend to congregate during rest times (generally the daytime).
Do dead co*ckroaches attract more co*ckroaches? Yes, they absolutely do! A dead co*ckroach releases oleic acid when they die. This has a pungent smell which intern attracts other co*ckroaches.
It takes about two weeks for all the roaches to be flushed out. Severe infestations might even require a second treatment. But your exterminator should let you know if this is needed.
If you end up finding a lot of co*ckroach droppings, or dead co*ckroaches, throughout your house, then it's probably time to call an exterminator. While using baits that you bought from your local grocery store could help kill off some roaches, chances are it won't be able to kill off the whole colony.
How do you know if you have an infestation?
You might often hear scratching on the walls, gnawing, squeaking, or scurrying. Larger bugs might also be heard if you listen closely. Holes and gnaw marks: Small holes in the walls and floors, or holes in or around the property are a giveaway of a possible infestation.
For best results, combine equal parts borax and white table sugar. Dust the mixture any place you've seen roach activity. When the roaches consume the borax, it will dehydrate them and kill them rapidly.
