Why is 4 wheel drive better than all-wheel drive?

How Does Four-Wheel Drive Work? Like AWD systems, 4WD is designed to send torque to all four of a vehicle's wheels to increase traction when needed. The 911 is a sports car icon that continuously defined the segment for six decades. Here are its 12 best versions throughout the years.

Yet, there are actually some 901 cars that made it into private ownership, making it a very iconic car which is also a very difficult car to source.. The 901 has to make it onto this list as it set the iconic Porsche 911 styling and design, as these features can still be seen in the new models and the intricate aesthetics of Porsche cars today.. Coming with a 3.8-liter engine that produces 350 hp, the car was a fantastic sports car that also had great handling.. Being able to be used as an everyday car while also being a perfect sports car is brilliant for those who want to get the most out of their Porsche.. This Porsche is one great car, and it deserves to be recognized as one of the best Porsche models ever.. A great car to tune, and a great car to drive because of its unassuming nature, the 911 T is surely one of the best Porsche 911s ever.. The car is iconic because of its brilliant performance, and because of its exclusivity, only 57 road cars were ever built.. Also, being the first-ever turbocharged 911, the car comes with a special status as the car has evolved so much as the 911 models now all come with turbocharged engines.. The lightweight nature of the car also meant that performance was increased with the car weighing just 2,149 lb.. Also featuring in the car is carbon fiber throughout, making the car all the more lightweight, enhancing the car's general performance, and making it all the better for drivers.. Indeed, the car really is the full package for sports car enthusiasts, and it is the perfect Porsche model on the market at the minute.. Unfortunately, FIA refused to accept Porsche's it, so the 911R cars were left to compete in non-production categories or as rally cars.

The Porsche 911 is regarded as one of the best driving cars of all time. That being said, some versions of the 911s are better than others.

Some things I love about my car is the comfort of my car.. 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera is an ok car. 2011 Porsche 911 Carrera is such a great handling car.. I love driving my 2012 Porsche 911. Nothing like the 1999 Porsche 911. Thank you Porsche!

There are a lot to choose from. Modern or classic, fast or (relatively) slow, turbo or naturally aspirated—but which Porsche 911 holds its value?

The French carmaker objected to Porsche’s use of 901, and in response, Porsche adopted the 911 designated, which remains to this today.. The first Porsche 911 (bearing the designation 911) was made later the same year, in November, after Porsche changed the name.. The letters RS stand for Rennsport in Porsche vernacular, a designation given to only the most focused of 911 models—the next level up these days are the Cup and RSR models, which are essentially race cars.. Over the last two years, no Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 has sold for less than the equivalent of $1,000,000.. That which represent what could perhaps be the magnum opus of turbocharged air-cooled Porsche performance capability, and perhaps air-cooled Porsche performance as a whole, however, is the GT2.. The current Porsche 911, even a lowly base model Carrera, can outperform the 911s of yesterday and yesteryear (including many of the performance-oriented and turbocharged models) by leaps and bounds.

The system works seamlessly, but its minor advantages don't justify the cost.

It's long been our goal to test every version of Porsche's rear-engine sports car, but there's more to this quest than pure journalistic curiosity.. The 911 under the editorial microscope this time is the Carrera 4, the base model equipped with all-wheel drive.. Other than the additional all-wheel-drive componentry and the 156-pound increase in curb weight that accompanies it, the Carrera 4 is identical to its rear-drive stablemate.. Tested: 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera. Tested: Base Porsche 911 Still Has the Goods. Our Aventurine Green Metallic test car was equipped with what is, by Porsche standards, a mere handful of options.. The important pieces include the Sport Chrono package ($2,720); 20-inch front and 21-inch rear Carrera Classic wheels ($2,450); sport exhaust system ($2,950); 18-way adaptive sport seats ($3,830); and the full leather interior ($4,530).. Engage Sport Plus, and the launch commences at 5,000 rpm, with 60 mph arriving in 3.4 seconds and the quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds at 118 mph.. The new model matched the time in the quarter-mile and was 1 mph faster, took one more foot to stop from 70 mph, and delivered an additional 0.03 g of cornering traction.. We'll soon put the rear-drive 992 coupe through our instrumented-test regime to see how it compares, and we're guessing its performance will be essentially a wash: a tenth of a second or two behind the Carrera 4 to 60 mph given the off-the-line traction advantage that all-wheel drive provides, and a nose ahead at the quarter-mile mark thanks to its lighter weight.. If the new Carrera 4's all-wheel-drive system doesn't deliver a significant straight-line performance advantage and is virtually undetectable in normal driving, isn't it akin to the proverbial redwood falling in the forest that no one hears?. We experienced the system's full capability last year during a Porsche heritage event when attempting to follow Porsche factory racer Patrick Long around a soaked Sonoma Raceway during a deluge.. We were both in 443-hp Carrera S models, with Long in the rear-drive version while we trailed in a 4S, which uses the same AWD system as the base car.. It was no surprise that the two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner carried more speed through the turns, but the all-wheel-drive car put its power down so surefootedly coming off the corners that we were actually able to claw back some of the gap Long had pulled out before the next braking zone.. Even for those few 911 customers who plan on driving their Carreras in winter, we strongly suggest forgoing the all-wheel-drive model.

The history and current line-up of the 911 are stupidly complicated, so we're here to guide you through the madness

Currently, it’s also available on S models as the Carrera 4S.. All-wheel drive Carrera models used to be wider than their rear-driven siblings, but since the arrival of the 992, all models share the same shell.. Currently, the 911 Cabriolet is available as a Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Turbo and Turbo S.. It was certainly an improvement on the 997 Speedster, which was merely a buttressed GTS with a fancy roof made by Porsche exclusive.. Early 996 Carreras had a 3.4-litre engine, while later models had a 3.6.. It was available with a 3.4-litre or 3.8-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six depending on if you went for a Carrera or Carrera S, but all that changed with the arrival of the 991.2, which ditched the atmospheric engines for a 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine with two different available outputs.

Looking for a car that offers the peace of mind of all-wheel drive? These are the best choices across multiple segments.

Growing numbers of automakers are making this traction-adding feature optional or even standard on a wide range of models, with some of the most popular cars on the market benefiting from an additional set of drive wheels.. A strong handler despite not being marketed as a sport sedan, the top-tier turbocharged four-cylinder engine is the one to target, as it provides 260 horsepower and a very reasonable 32 mpg in highway driving.. The K5's cabin is equally eye-catching, helping Kia achieve a near-premium feel with its affordable sedan, and it also offers an AWD option when paired with its efficient 1.6-liter turbo motor.. One of the newest electric cars on the market, the Lucid Air took home our MotorTrend Car of the Year hardware for 2022 .. With a massive 1,111 horsepower and 1,390 lb-ft of torque on tap from the Dream Edition P, it's only logical that the Air make use of standard all-wheel drive to harness its electric motor output.. As it only engages at speeds under 43 mph, it has less of an impact on efficiency than you might think: The Prius with AWD-e still posts 50 mpg in combined driving according to the EPA, a drop of only 2 mpg versus the standard model.. The Dodge Challenger GT provides a muscle car image to go with its all-wheel-drive system, and while you can't specify any of the brand's fire-breathing V-8 engines under its hood, you do get just over 300 horsepower from its 3.6-liter V-6.. With a driving range of between 315 and 353 miles, as well as a 0-60 mph time of just over three seconds for the quickest version of the car, the Model 3 is engaging to drive, easy to fit into almost anyone's life, and reasonably priced at just over $45,000 for the most affordable model.. The MotorTrend Car of the Year for 2021 , the E-Class is also available as a coupe, a convertible, and a wagon, with the E450 delivering 362 horsepower from a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that is the perfect, smooth companion on any road trip.. All-wheel drive adds four-seasons confidence to what is already an impressive package, and if you're feeling the need for speed, the turbo V-8 offered by the AMG editions of the E-Class represents the pinnacle of German performance.. The Porsche 911 is a sports car icon, and it also happens to have a long history of offering all-wheel drive as a popular option.. A MotorTrend favorite regardless of whether it's in coupe or convertible form, the 911 provides the choice of AWD at nearly every trim level, with the 379-hp base models and the 640-hp Turbo S editions serving as bookends for the 911s that benefit from the extra traction of AWD.. Subaru Legacy Kia K5 Audi A4 Lucid Air Toyota Prius Dodge Challenger GT Tesla Model 3 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (E450) Audi A7 Porsche 911

These AWD sports cars are just as fun as RWD models, and they offer superior grip when launching, through corners, and on slippery surfaces.

In the past, driving sports car was relegated to sunny days, but these sports cars are fun to drive during all four seasons .. This makes the small coupe launch to 60mph in 3.5 seconds.. A modern AWD drive train was a necessary addition to the M cars if BMW was to keep up with the competition.. The Golf R also comes standard with VW's intelligent 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, whose rear differential actively distributes torque between the rear left and right wheels for improved traction.. The Acura NSX has been a popular nameplate since 1990.. The Nissan GTR has undergone a constant evolution since it hit the market in 2007, and the current version is as refined as they come.. The Porsche 911 is a legendary car, and so is the latest Porsche Traction Management system used in the current models.. While the 911 Turbo has used AWD since 1995, Porsche has used the latest PTM in the car since 2013 featuring a multi-clutch controlled electro-hydraulically, a departure from the electro-mechanical control.. The 911 is already a fun car, but the PTM adds faster and more accurate power delivery control in relation to traction, steering, and driving ability.

It's time to choose your favourite version of that annoyingly good German sportscar

The most significant move made in this time was the introduction of turbocharging to the 911, the Turbo you see above arriving in 1975 with a mighty 260bhp powering the rear wheels.. The 964, to give it its internal codename, arrived at the very end of the 1980s, bringing with it some mildly updated styling but a whole heap of new tech.. Four-wheel drive arrived for the first time, as did other tech goodies like power steering, ABS brakes and airbags.. Following such a loved generation of car, the 1998 arrival of the water-cooled 996 was met with grumbles and cries of 'it’s lost its character', something of a running theme for new-generation 911s and the implacable Porsche aficionados they’ve tried to please.. The 996 received its big facelift in 2001, with attempts to appease critics of its styling, an updated interior and a new glass-roofed Targa variant, though it was nothing like as stylish as its ancestors.. The 991 arrived in 2011, and while it may have been coined the prettiest 911 in decades, nothing could save it from a wrath of criticism for its new electric steering.. The basic silhouette hasn't changed but there's a big styling leap in the shape of the long light bar at the back and full track widths for all models, not just the four-wheel-drive and motorsport cars.

CAR takes you through all the current flavours of the 911 on offer

Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet 992. Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet 992. Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet 4S 992. Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet 992. Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet 992

There is always going to be a better Porsche 911.

This time, it’s the 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera 4.. It has the lowest power output, and it's saddled with all-wheel drive, adding unnecessary weight (106 pounds more than a rear-drive Carrera) to a car that isn't some lurid, uncontrollable mess when power goes only to the rear.. That’s where the Carrera 4 starts making sense on paper, but in practice, it also makes sense the rest of the time.. Porsche claims 379 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque from the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six out back, which is 9 hp more than the previous-generation Carrera 4.. Unlike some all-wheel-drive performance cars, though, the 911 Carrera 4 doesn’t have a mode that fully disconnects the front axle.. Porsche has long since tuned out the dangerous side of driving a rear-engine car, but you can still sense the weight back there and the car working hard to keep it as neutral as possible.. After driving in fairly heavy rain for about a mile, the car suggested activating Wet Mode, which lowers the actuation threshold for traction control, stability control and ABS systems.. That flat-six starts sounding good around 3,000 rpm, and only gets better on the way to the 7,500-rpm redline — ours has the optional $2,950 Sport Exhaust System that should probably just be standard equipment.. But at the same time, maximum torque hits at only 1,950 rpm, making the car feel punchy when driven at low speeds.. It’s sumptuous, but that’s money that could’ve been spent on performance/convenience extras this car didn’t have like Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus or the Front Axle Lift System.. Put some winter tires on the car, and Porsche’s winter driving experiences have shown what a blast you’ll likely be having.. That car is now encroaching on supercar levels of speed, and it’s just $114,650, cheaper than our test car with its options.. There is always going to be a better Porsche 911 , but know that you can still have a hell of a good time in a base Carrera 4.

The Porsche 911 might be the perfect sports car, but competitors include the Chevrolet C8 Corvette, Aston Martin Vantage, Jaguar F-Type, Ford Shelby Mustang, and Mazda Miata.

When the Bowling Green, Kentucky, Corvette factory plays catch-up after last fall's UAW strike, you'll be able to buy a base C8 Corvette (assuming your local Chevy store doesn't price gouge) with a 495-horsepower engine for the price of a base Porsche 911 Carrera with a 379-horsepower twin-turbo flat-six—and you'll have enough cash left in the bank to buy a new Chevy Blazer (or say, a Volkswagen Atlas ) as your winter car.. The Cayman T/Boxster T and the base Cayman/Boxster come with a 2.0-liter turbo-four, rated at 300 hp and 280 lb-ft, with 170-mph top speeds; 0-60 takes 4.5 seconds in the T models and 4.9 seconds in the base models.. Pricing starts at the upper end of the 911 range, but you get 503 horsepower.. Unfortunately, though, ever since the 2020 model year, the F-Type comes only with an automatic transmission.. Alright, maybe it's not apples-to-apples to call one of these cars a Porsche 911 competitor.. Flis Performance and Mazda have not announced pricing on the new Cup racer, but the the '17 Miata Cup was priced in the low $60,000s, plus spares.. Base-Price Range: $6,500 (frame only)-$12,000 (with components). Chevrolet Corvette C8 $59,995-$76,945 Porsche 718 Cayman/Boxster $58,850-$100,550 Aston Martin Vantage $156,080 Jaguar F-Type $62,625-$127,725 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350/GT500/GT350R $61,535-$74,530 Mazda MX-5 Miata Cup Racer $68,000 Pinarello Dogma F12 $6,500 (frame only)-$12,000 (with components)

It never rainsin Southern California. Tell that to the pitter-patter currently spitting up all over the cracked asphalt in the San Gabriel Mountains outside of Los Angeles.

A wise man might, considering that this Porsche was commissioned almost a year ago by a very fortunate owner who made a series of painstaking decisions about the exterior and interior colors, size of the engine, and types of leather.. We’ve never met, but that’s how much he trusts and respects the company, Singer Vehicle Design, to whom he commissioned this unique car.. Seamus is an Irishman who serves as Singer’s test driver, sometimes engineer, and all-around go-to man.. Officially, this car is a Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer.. Singer says it "restores and modifies existing Porsche automobiles … [and] does not manufacture or sell automobiles.". A 911 with Singer’s services is one of the most beautiful Porsches you’ve ever seen, an artful mélange of design.. But unlike a very old Porsche, the promise is that it will start every time you turn the key, and it will outrun many modern sports cars.. A Porsche 911 restored by Singer starts with the chassis and body of a classic 964 911, an air-cooled model built from 1989 to 1994.. AWD seems rather antithetical to Singer’s ethos, even though various Porsches have driven all four wheels for generations.. As I portage us to Big Tujunga, I acknowledge that there’s a certain poetry in the rain, seeing that we’re testing Singer’s first-ever 911 modification with all-wheel drive.. Seamus says, "There are two kinds of powerful, old sports cars: one is a cat, the other is a dog.

Porsche beefs up AWD system for new 911 Carrera 4 coupe and Cabriolet | Porsche Club of America

The result of all of this that pertains to driving is better traction and handling through more accurate adjustment of clutch force, Porsche says.. Like the 2020 911 Carrera models, the new 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet are powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat six engine fitted with model-specific turbochargers, developing 379 hp at 6,500 rpm (nine horsepower more than the previous 911 Carrera 4 models) and 331 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,950 to 5,000 rpm.. The 2020 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet accelerates to 60 mph from standstill in just 4.2 seconds, and in 4.0 seconds flat when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package.. Like on the 911 Carrera 4S models, the increased performance of the 911 Carrera 4 models led to a further development of the front axle drive.. A fully variable, electronically controlled limited slip rear differential with Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), which is standard on the 911 Carrera S and 4S models, can be ordered as an option.. The wheels on the 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet feature a staggered diameter, measuring 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear.. Like on the other 2020 911 variants, Wet Mode is included as standard equipment.. The driver can then call up vehicle settings particularly suited for wet roads at push of a button, or by means of the mode switch on the steering wheel (when fitted with the optional Sport Chrono Package).. The optional Sport Exhaust system distinguished by two oval tailpipes can be ordered for all models.. The 2020 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet are available to order now and are expected to reach U.S. dealers in early 2020.
