There are a lot to choose from. Modern or classic, fast or (relatively) slow, turbo or naturally aspirated—but which Porsche 911 holds its value?
The French carmaker objected to Porsche’s use of 901, and in response, Porsche adopted the 911 designated, which remains to this today.. The first Porsche 911 (bearing the designation 911) was made later the same year, in November, after Porsche changed the name.. The letters RS stand for Rennsport in Porsche vernacular, a designation given to only the most focused of 911 models—the next level up these days are the Cup and RSR models, which are essentially race cars.. Over the last two years, no Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 has sold for less than the equivalent of $1,000,000.. That which represent what could perhaps be the magnum opus of turbocharged air-cooled Porsche performance capability, and perhaps air-cooled Porsche performance as a whole, however, is the GT2.. The current Porsche 911, even a lowly base model Carrera, can outperform the 911s of yesterday and yesteryear (including many of the performance-oriented and turbocharged models) by leaps and bounds.
The system works seamlessly, but its minor advantages don't justify the cost.
It's long been our goal to test every version of Porsche's rear-engine sports car, but there's more to this quest than pure journalistic curiosity.. The 911 under the editorial microscope this time is the Carrera 4, the base model equipped with all-wheel drive.. Other than the additional all-wheel-drive componentry and the 156-pound increase in curb weight that accompanies it, the Carrera 4 is identical to its rear-drive stablemate.. Tested: 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera. Tested: Base Porsche 911 Still Has the Goods. Our Aventurine Green Metallic test car was equipped with what is, by Porsche standards, a mere handful of options.. The important pieces include the Sport Chrono package ($2,720); 20-inch front and 21-inch rear Carrera Classic wheels ($2,450); sport exhaust system ($2,950); 18-way adaptive sport seats ($3,830); and the full leather interior ($4,530).. Engage Sport Plus, and the launch commences at 5,000 rpm, with 60 mph arriving in 3.4 seconds and the quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds at 118 mph.. The new model matched the time in the quarter-mile and was 1 mph faster, took one more foot to stop from 70 mph, and delivered an additional 0.03 g of cornering traction.. We'll soon put the rear-drive 992 coupe through our instrumented-test regime to see how it compares, and we're guessing its performance will be essentially a wash: a tenth of a second or two behind the Carrera 4 to 60 mph given the off-the-line traction advantage that all-wheel drive provides, and a nose ahead at the quarter-mile mark thanks to its lighter weight.. If the new Carrera 4's all-wheel-drive system doesn't deliver a significant straight-line performance advantage and is virtually undetectable in normal driving, isn't it akin to the proverbial redwood falling in the forest that no one hears?. We experienced the system's full capability last year during a Porsche heritage event when attempting to follow Porsche factory racer Patrick Long around a soaked Sonoma Raceway during a deluge.. We were both in 443-hp Carrera S models, with Long in the rear-drive version while we trailed in a 4S, which uses the same AWD system as the base car.. It was no surprise that the two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner carried more speed through the turns, but the all-wheel-drive car put its power down so surefootedly coming off the corners that we were actually able to claw back some of the gap Long had pulled out before the next braking zone.. Even for those few 911 customers who plan on driving their Carreras in winter, we strongly suggest forgoing the all-wheel-drive model.

Currently, it’s also available on S models as the Carrera 4S.. All-wheel drive Carrera models used to be wider than their rear-driven siblings, but since the arrival of the 992, all models share the same shell.. Currently, the 911 Cabriolet is available as a Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Turbo and Turbo S.. It was certainly an improvement on the 997 Speedster, which was merely a buttressed GTS with a fancy roof made by Porsche exclusive.. Early 996 Carreras had a 3.4-litre engine, while later models had a 3.6.. It was available with a 3.4-litre or 3.8-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six depending on if you went for a Carrera or Carrera S, but all that changed with the arrival of the 991.2, which ditched the atmospheric engines for a 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine with two different available outputs.

The most significant move made in this time was the introduction of turbocharging to the 911, the Turbo you see above arriving in 1975 with a mighty 260bhp powering the rear wheels.. The 964, to give it its internal codename, arrived at the very end of the 1980s, bringing with it some mildly updated styling but a whole heap of new tech.. Four-wheel drive arrived for the first time, as did other tech goodies like power steering, ABS brakes and airbags.. Following such a loved generation of car, the 1998 arrival of the water-cooled 996 was met with grumbles and cries of 'it’s lost its character', something of a running theme for new-generation 911s and the implacable Porsche aficionados they’ve tried to please.. The 996 received its big facelift in 2001, with attempts to appease critics of its styling, an updated interior and a new glass-roofed Targa variant, though it was nothing like as stylish as its ancestors.. The 991 arrived in 2011, and while it may have been coined the prettiest 911 in decades, nothing could save it from a wrath of criticism for its new electric steering.. The basic silhouette hasn't changed but there's a big styling leap in the shape of the long light bar at the back and full track widths for all models, not just the four-wheel-drive and motorsport cars.

There is always going to be a better Porsche 911.
This time, it’s the 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera 4.. It has the lowest power output, and it's saddled with all-wheel drive, adding unnecessary weight (106 pounds more than a rear-drive Carrera) to a car that isn't some lurid, uncontrollable mess when power goes only to the rear.. That’s where the Carrera 4 starts making sense on paper, but in practice, it also makes sense the rest of the time.. Porsche claims 379 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque from the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six out back, which is 9 hp more than the previous-generation Carrera 4.. Unlike some all-wheel-drive performance cars, though, the 911 Carrera 4 doesn’t have a mode that fully disconnects the front axle.. Porsche has long since tuned out the dangerous side of driving a rear-engine car, but you can still sense the weight back there and the car working hard to keep it as neutral as possible.. After driving in fairly heavy rain for about a mile, the car suggested activating Wet Mode, which lowers the actuation threshold for traction control, stability control and ABS systems.. That flat-six starts sounding good around 3,000 rpm, and only gets better on the way to the 7,500-rpm redline — ours has the optional $2,950 Sport Exhaust System that should probably just be standard equipment.. But at the same time, maximum torque hits at only 1,950 rpm, making the car feel punchy when driven at low speeds.. It’s sumptuous, but that’s money that could’ve been spent on performance/convenience extras this car didn’t have like Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus or the Front Axle Lift System.. Put some winter tires on the car, and Porsche’s winter driving experiences have shown what a blast you’ll likely be having.. That car is now encroaching on supercar levels of speed, and it’s just $114,650, cheaper than our test car with its options.. There is always going to be a better Porsche 911 , but know that you can still have a hell of a good time in a base Carrera 4.
The Porsche 911 might be the perfect sports car, but competitors include the Chevrolet C8 Corvette, Aston Martin Vantage, Jaguar F-Type, Ford Shelby Mustang, and Mazda Miata.
When the Bowling Green, Kentucky, Corvette factory plays catch-up after last fall's UAW strike, you'll be able to buy a base C8 Corvette (assuming your local Chevy store doesn't price gouge) with a 495-horsepower engine for the price of a base Porsche 911 Carrera with a 379-horsepower twin-turbo flat-six—and you'll have enough cash left in the bank to buy a new Chevy Blazer (or say, a Volkswagen Atlas ) as your winter car.. The Cayman T/Boxster T and the base Cayman/Boxster come with a 2.0-liter turbo-four, rated at 300 hp and 280 lb-ft, with 170-mph top speeds; 0-60 takes 4.5 seconds in the T models and 4.9 seconds in the base models.. Pricing starts at the upper end of the 911 range, but you get 503 horsepower.. Unfortunately, though, ever since the 2020 model year, the F-Type comes only with an automatic transmission.. Alright, maybe it's not apples-to-apples to call one of these cars a Porsche 911 competitor.. Flis Performance and Mazda have not announced pricing on the new Cup racer, but the the '17 Miata Cup was priced in the low $60,000s, plus spares.. We’ve never met, but that’s how much he trusts and respects the company, Singer Vehicle Design, to whom he commissioned this unique car.. Seamus is an Irishman who serves as Singer’s test driver, sometimes engineer, and all-around go-to man.. Officially, this car is a Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer.. Singer says it "restores and modifies existing Porsche automobiles … [and] does not manufacture or sell automobiles.". A 911 with Singer’s services is one of the most beautiful Porsches you’ve ever seen, an artful mélange of design.. A fully variable, electronically controlled limited slip rear differential with Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), which is standard on the 911 Carrera S and 4S models, can be ordered as an option..
