A lens that is concave is a type of lens that possesses at least one surface that is curved inwards. It is a lens that is diverging in nature which means that it spreads out the rays of light that have been refracted through it. Concave lenses diverge a single beam of light when it passes through leading to the formation of upright, diminished, and virtual images.

And then we can say that according to Pliny, Emperor Nero it was said to watch a game of gladiatorial by using an emerald, that is we can presumably say a concave shape to correct for the problem of myopia.

The word lens is derived from the word lēns. It is a Latin word that names the lentil, that is because a lense that is double-convex is lentil-shaped.

The plant lentil also gives its name to a figure which is geometric.

Some of the scholars even argued that the evidence which is from the archeological age indicates that there was very widespread use of lenses in antiquity that spanned several millennia.

A concave lens has several uses in real life. Some of these uses are listed below:-

  • Telescopes- The lenses that are used in telescopes and binoculars are concave lenses. The reasons for using concave lenses for telescopes and binoculars. Firstly, concave lenses help in magnifying the object which is the prime job of telescopes and binoculars. Concave lenses do not distort the image while magnification, unlike convex lenses. Hence, it is very essential to use concave lenses in telescopes and binoculars. Concave lenses also help to focus clearly on the object; hence, it is used for this purpose.

  • Eye-Glasses- Myopia or near-sightedness is an eye disease that makes it difficult for people to see things clearly at a distance. In this disease, due to the extra length of the eyeball, it makes it difficult to project images of distant objects. This can be cured with the help of eyeglasses made using concave lenses. As a diverging lens, concave lenses in eyeglasses spread the light rays a bit more throughout the eye which enables the wearer to see distant objects more clearly. The concave lens spreads the light rays before it reaches the eyeball and hence, faraway things can be observed more clearly.

  • Lasers- Laser beams are a technology that is used in a lot of equipment. Several medical types of equipment, scanners, CD players, DVD players, and many other instruments use laser beams. Laser beams are generally very highly focused and need to be dispersed to ensure the proper working of an instrument. Concave lenses are used to disperse the focus of the laser beams and make sure a device is functioning properly.   • Flashlights- The use of concave lenses in flashlights is done to magnify the light coming out of it. The light ray directly goes through the concave lens and diverges when it passes through it making the light appear brighter. The increased radius of the light ray after passing through the concave lens makes for a wider beam.
